State Variation in the Hospital Costs of Gun Violence, 2010 and 2014

    Get PDF
This brief updates the armed assault hospital cost estimates with data from 2014, the first year of full implementation of the ACA's major coverage provisions. We provide data for Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Wisconsin; of these, Arizona, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Wisconsin were included in our previous brief. We selected these six states based on data availability, population size, geographic representation, and participation in the ACA Medicaid expansion (table 1). The states reflect a range of decisions on Medicaid coverage: Arizona, Kentucky, and New Jersey adopted the Medicaid expansion in 2014, but Florida, North Carolina, and Wisconsin did not. Arizona had a Section 1115 demonstration waiver in place in 2010 that provided coverage to childless adults with incomes up to 100 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL). Wisconsin also had a Section 1115 demonstration waiver to extend eligibility to 200 percent of FPL, but enrollment for the program was capped as of October 2009. In 2014, Wisconsin used state funds to provide eligibility to childless adults with incomes up to 100 percent of FPL and removed the enrollment cap. Most importantly, all six states have complete data for the analysis from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, described later in this brief

The Hospital Costs of Firearm Assaults

    Get PDF
In the wake of recent high profile incidents of gun violence, there is renewed national attention on the prevalence and cost of firearm assaults in the United States. To make informed policy decisions, lawmakers are calling for current and accurate data on the costs of these assaults. This brief examines the costs of emergency department (ED) visits and hospital admissions for firearm assault victims in the United States in 2010. These costs are further examined according to patient gender, age, median household income, and insurance status

Examining Leadership as Public Pedagogy for Social Justice

    Get PDF
The authors’ purpose in this study was to report on research that examined the meaning of leadership as a public pedagogy of socially just practice. Drawing on practitioners’ voices, the authors’ focused on what social justice means in the world of schools, what socially just practice is from a practitioner’s perspective, and the role that educational leaders play in connecting social justice and democracy in the educational setting. The authors engaged in an analysis of the narrative discourse related to social justice practices of practicing school leaders. As example, political issues that work to de-democratize social practice affect socially just practices in schools; narrowing equity for some and generating marginalizing spaces within the school culture. The authors posit that advancing “leadership as public pedagogy” presents students of educational leadership with an opportunity to examine the social text of their experience, drawing on them to ask not only what the social text means but also how it means, what its epistemological and theoretical grounds are as enacted in practice. The authors present a set of considerations for leadership preparation and practice that argue the importance of a public pedagogy orientation and the relevance of socially just practice for school leaders

Lasalocid Sodium Supplementation For Grazing Steers

    Get PDF
Lasalocid sodium (Bovatec) is a feed additive which has been reported to promote growth and improve feed utilization by cattle. The product appears to function by stimulating a more favorable and efficient microbial fermentation of the feed, thus improving rate and efficiency of production. Other research has also indicated the product to be an effective coccidiostat for cattle. A previous experiment (CATTLE 80-10) with feedlot steers fed a high-grain ration resulted in 4.3% greater gains with 8.3% less feed (ADG , 3.23 lb. with 7.63 lb. feed per 1b. gain for the control group). In the experiment reported here, lasalocid was tested for its effects on weight gain of grazing steers. The product was fed at two levels and compared to a nonmedicated control and to monensin (Rumensin)

Methods of Vitamin A Supplementation for Fattening Beef Cattle

    Get PDF
The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of administering vitamin A through a mineral supplement or injection on feedlot performance and liver storage of vitamin A. The feeding trail was conducted at James Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center near Redfield during the summer and fall of 1977. The present study also involved a comparison of conventionally-dried, solar-dried and acid-treated corn. Feedlot performance results for these treatments have been reported in the 1978 Progress Report of the Center

Performance of Lambs Fed Rations With Oyster Shells or Various Levels of Hay

    Get PDF
High-concentrate rations have been shown to have several advantages in large cattle feeding operations because they produce high rates of gain with low feed requirements. It has been a common practice to feed lamb rations with relatively high levels of roughage. However, lamb feeders might also benefit under many conditions if results similar to those with cattle fed high-concentrate rations could be obtained with lambs. Little research has been reported on the relative value for lambs of all-concentrate rations and those with low levels of roughage or roughage replacers such as oyster shells. Two experiments were conducted to study feedlot performance of lambs fed rations which contained oyster shells or various levels of hay

Lasalocid or Monensin Supplementation for Short Periods of Finishing

Information is needed on response to lasalocid and monensin under conditions of rapid adaptation to high-concentrate diets and short periods of finishing for heavyweight cattle. Two experiments were conducted to obtain data when feeding under these conditions

    Lasalocid Supplementation for Grazing Steers

Management systems for pastures and for the grazing animals can be major factors in the amount and efficiency of production. Several nutritive and nonnutritive products have been reported to improve utilization of pasture forages and animal performance. Improvement in rate and efficiency of production can be of considerable economic benefit. The importance becomes greater with increasing costs and livestock production. Lasalocid sodium (Bovatec) is a feed additive shown to improve growth rate and feed efficiency of cattle in the feedlot and on pasture. Two experiments were conducted to test the product when fed at 100, 200 or 300 mg per head daily in a corn supplement to steers grazing predominately bromegrass pasture
